Freddy Fox and Lily James had an entire audience holding their breath as Romeo and Juliet at London’s Garrick Theatre tonight. Beautifully refurbished in 2015 the theatre has become home to Kenneth Branagh’s Theatre Company, and will doubtless be a means by which many become hooked on William Shakespeare’s brilliance. I imagine the Bard himself would deem Lily James, Freddy Fox, Derek Jacobi, and the entire company, faultless.
Juliet’s nurse responds to the good Friar Laurence in Act 3 Scene 3 with
O Lord, I could have stayed here all the night
To hear good counsel. Oh, what learning is!
And just so, spellbound, it was with us.
