Do you ever head towards your wooden hills knowing that you’ll be dreaming about somewhere or someone specific, or both? A part of a single conversation this evening catapulted me back to a warm day in Cannes, in October 2019, where the relatively ordinary scenes I photographed were bursting with colour, intention, purpose and bright vivacity. I can ‘hear’ now some of the conversations overheard then – voices slightly raised above the hum of this busy market scene. Cannes you dream tonight? (excuse the pun!) – I think I will. And I’ll probably smile, even in sleep, for the joy of what I believe to be among the greatest gifts and privileges of our lives – the ability we have to travel, and yes, to remember, and to dream.
