just play

I’d love to be a reasonably competent sketcher / painter but have never displayed much artistic flair! I shared my mild regret about that with a lovely tutor on a “Pen and Wash Day” course: “Oh, just play”, the lady said, “don’t worry about it. Just play, like a child, and over time enjoy watching some development.” Well, that rang a bell – a sort of “permission granted” to keep on enjoying art shops, and canvas and paper, and little sketchbooks and tiny pads for miniatures – and just have a play every once in a while. Recently I’ve been inspired by sketchbookblue in sunny Australia. So here’s my online sketchpad, a place to keep at least some record of my playtimes – and maybe to watch a bit of progress of sorts over time. It will quickly become apparent that I love Brittany, boats and lighthouses – perhaps their ubiquity hereunder will encourage me to try some new subjects!

    1. As are you! Thanks so much. I’m especially glad to hear from you today as we’ve been watching the progress of the snow on the East Coast with awe and amazement. Do hope that you’re thriving. It never ceases to amaze me that the distance between here and the US seems a mere trifle when thinking of you – and dear Lori – and of your loved ones. As ever, thank you for your love and encouragement x

    1. Thank you for saying so. Mine too, I think. I aspire to spareness of line. The boats are most often moored … they have been out on the high seas but are, at least for now, quiet and peaceful, guided “home” to safe haven by the ever present light-tower.

  1. They’re beautiful sketches windinmywheels…..the sketch with the yellow sun on the right side particularly called out…..it’s very Turner-esque….delightfully created with minimum of fuss in glorious greens and gold with a hint of pale blue…I can feel every brushstroke. The lone sailboat also is very evocative and could only be drawn on location to get create the feeling. Enjoying these very much 🙂

    1. Thank you very much indeed sketchbookblue. That you should say so means a great deal to me since I very much admire your own – I think – far superior sketches! I’ll keep enjoying and trying though. That’s probably the key, do you think? – enjoyment and long-term perseverance.

      1. Absolutely…. enjoyment is everything and it shows in your sketches…. to sketch what captures your attention and draws you in…so hard to draw something you have no connection with. Play everyday….sketch something everyday even if only the teapot, window view, foot on the end of your leg, pot plant, furniture….really absolutely anything….stopping to really look closely opens up a whole new world that we mostly don’t see! Enjoy!
