Lakeland September

.

Newly returned, I note the dew on my lawn in Lakeland this morning. A slightly sharper air. The soil-scent of Autumn is present, albeit that the morning dewdrops will soon glisten awhile in still very warm sunshine, and then take flight until tonight.

.

Autumn is lovely in Lakeland – and in the beautiful Edinburgh that will have turned quite golden by the time I’m there again next month. I’m aware toward summer’s end of a slight attendant melancholy with the turning of the seasons – whilst simultaneously revelling in the different beauties that each new season brings.

  1. I always feel that autumn is all about offering permission to the colors of spring and summer..The vibrant colors, the brightness of their beauty and their full-throated shouts “look at me”…and with the coming of fall, we thank them for their magnificence and welcome something calmer…the leaves are tired of outspoken color, the flowers bend with exhaustion. So we welcome their fallow period; they have more than deserved this rest…xx

    1. How lucky am I to have such beautiful, thoughtful and reflective writers kind enough to leave me a note here? Thank you so much 🙏. As so often, I think of Mary Oliver when I read you, dear Mimi. “Full throated shouts” indeed. In you, in Mary, in Lori, in Dave Kanigan, in me, in beloved animals and children and plants and flowers – the “full throated” is inate creativity reaching out to be a blessing and to be blessed; to be heard and seen and celebrated. Thank you, as ever, for sharing your joy and reflection 🤗🌱xx

  2. Mimi’s description of autumn’s beauty is so lyric that I hesitate to comment, but these shimmering photos beg for a word (or two) 😉. For me, autumn is Mother Nature’s great sigh, a
final hurrah of color and sound and fragrance…the burnt sienna and glowing orange of the maples, the musky smell of soil turned over to rest and rejuvenate for the spring, the soft rustle of the drying leaves, all a siren call to snuggle in and prepare for winter. A quiet ache as we say farewell to another season, a grateful sigh as we prepare to embrace the peace and regeneration that winter allows. Thank you for capturing the essence of this moment so beautifully, Simon… ❤️

    1. … but I’m so glad you did, Lori – because your reflections and your joy have represented a ‘shimmering’ to me, across a great ocean, for years! I often try to look at the world through your eyes; often try to put some of your words to shades or colours or communication or ideas. Quiet aches and simultaneous joys are among life’s great paradoxes, aren’t they? Rich days indeed. Yes: I’m glad you didn’t hesitate to share your thoughts for too long. Thank you! 🤗🌱xx
